The Historic James House
is located in the town of Arcadia, Louisiana

Arcadia's name commemorates the Ancient Greek region of Arcadia.

Shadrick P. Sutton was the first postmaster, and it was he who gave Arcadia its name, which means "beautiful hills." Arcadia officially became a town in 1903 when the census declared that there were one thousand residents.

The original site is still known as "Old Town" and is located on the Jonesboro Highway between Highway 9 and College Street. Arcadia was originally a stagecoach stop on the Wire Road, but the town moved to its present location when the V.S. & P. Railroad came through in 1884.

Perfect place to retire...

Arcadia, Louisiana is the perfect place to retire! After years of the corporate rat-race, being bound to an alarm clock, to retreat from the relentless movement of the city and fighting traffic -- imagine living in the quiet laid-back charm of a Louisiana town nestled in the only mountain the state claims! Arcadia lays near the top of the highest point in the state of Louisiana - Driskill Mountain.

Driskill Mountain is approximately 535 feet above sea level and being at a higher elevation, offers less humid conditions, and less frequent rainstorms that can spin severe down-bursts and tornadoes. Where many surrounding areas are likely to bear the brunt of summer thunderstorms, it is the Driskill Mountain that diverts much of the more severe weather that strikes the state.

Mountaintop flora include wild azalea, dogwood, wisteria and hummingbird vines and fragrant scarlet and yellow honeysuckle. The area is home to some of the finest stands of hardwood and conifer trees in the United States. This forest coverage also boasts game hunting throughout the year. Deer, boar, waterfowl and sport fishing are a full season draw. If you're a hunter, or prefer hunting with a camera, you will discover thousands of species of birds -- many that pass through the state on their migratory flight to other parts of the world.

Arcadia, Louisiana, offers a quiet refuge from the large crowded towns and is located just off I-20 Interstate that will quickly get you into Shreveport to the west, and on your way to the east toward Monroe. A 30-minute trip will take you to the finest gaming casinos in the state with lively entertainment, concerts, and educational excursions.

If camping, hiking and fishing are more your style, there are dozens of lakes less than 20-minutes away! Lake Foursome, Lake Bistineau, Lake Claiborne, and Kepler Lake are just a few such getaway spots for a bit of communing with nature.

Arcadia is also centrally located near colleges and universities (Grambling University, Louisiana Tech, LSU-Shreveport, Northwestern State University, Centenary College, Bossier Parish Community College, University of Louisiana at Monroe)
